The very thing that separates AfroGospel from Afrobeats or any other variation of contemporary sound is the gospel itself, the Word of God that sits at the centre of it all.
From the beginning of time, believers have always turned scripture into song.
Do you remember this song?
“Thou art worthy oh Lord
To receive glory, honour and power,
for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created”
It was lifted directly from Revelation 4:11, and has been sung across generations.
In gospel music, we see that same pattern, but expressed through modern sound. The beat may change, the delivery may evolve, but sometimes the lyrics remain straight from scripture, word for word, or clearly drawn line by line from biblical truth.
Let’s look at a few examples:
1. Here With Us – Dunsin Oyekan
This is one of the songs from the Generation Intimacy album.
As the song progresses, there’s a simple but powerful chant that’s lifted directly from the Lord’s prayer:
“Our Father, hallowed be Your name
Your name be praised as it is in heaven”
This is taken directly from Matthew 6:9–10.
There is no rewording here. It is scripture as it is, reminding us that sometimes the most powerful thing you can sing is exactly what has already been written in the word of God.

2. Yahweh Sabaoth – Nathaniel Bassey
“Yahweh Sabaoth, the Lord of Hosts, the King of glory”
This phrase is drawn directly from scriptures, like 1 Samuel 1:3 and Isaiah 6:3, where God is revealed as the Lord of Hosts.
This song is also very simple, from beginning to end, it just repeats itself, allowing the full extent of the word to really sink in.

3. Omo Daddy – Limoblaze
This song is a beautiful blend of multiple scriptures woven into one identity-filled declaration:
“City on a hill, that’s me”
(Matthew 5:14)
“Look at the beauty of Jesus in me”
(Colossians 1:27)
“Goodness and mercy follow me”
(Psalm 23:6)
“Loads of benefits daily”
(Psalm 68:19)
“Who am I that You’re mindful of me”
(Psalm 8:4)
“You left the 99 just for me”
(Luke 15:4)

Rather than lifting one verse directly, this song stitches together multiple scriptures into a single, confident expression of identity in Christ.
It is a powerful but simple song that reminds the listener of who they are, what they carry, and how deeply they are loved.
