Born Joseph Oscar Nii Armah Mettle in Accra, Ghana, Joe Mettle is one of the most celebrated gospel artists to emerge from West Africa in the last two decades.

Joe Mettle grew up in a home of modest means, but music was always present. His home was filled with the sound of the radio playing music from the likes of Esther Nyamekye, Mary Gansah, Diana Hobson, and Tagoe Sisters, and a beautiful grandmother who sang hymns in their traditional “Ga” dialect.
During his early days of singing, he worked as a backing vocalist for some Ghanaian gospel greats including Cindy Thompson, the late Danny Nettey, and Reverend Tom Bright Davies. He later became the lead singer for Soul Winners, an indigenous multicultural music group.
On April 8, 2017, he became the first Ghanaian gospel musician to win the coveted Artiste of the Year award at the Ghana Music Award. This is a category that had never been won by a gospel artist since the awards’ inception. He also took home Gospel Artiste of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year at the same ceremony.
Joe Mettle’s discography spans six albums including My Gratitude (2011), Sound of Praise (2013), The Encounter (2015), God of Miracles (2017), Wind of Revival (2019), and The Experience (2021). His songs, many of them in Twi carry both cultural identity and spiritual depth. Tracks like “Mehia Wo Yesu” (I Need You Jesus), “Mensuro” (I Will Not Fear), “Onwanwani” (God of Wonders), and “Turning Around” have become anthems in Ghanaian churches and beyond.
Joe Mettle’s reach extends well beyond Ghana’s borders. He has shared stages with Darlene Zscech, CeCe Winans, Don Moen, Fred Hammond, Tye Tribbett, Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir, Nathaniel Bassey, and many others. He was invited to be part of the Gospel Goes Classical live recordings in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2017 and 2018, leading a solo and singing as a trio alongside Mahalia Buchanan and Grammy Award winner Donnie McClurkin, accompanied by the 64-piece Johannesburg Music Initiative Orchestra.
He married Selassie Dzisa in August 2020 and through Joe Mettle Ministries, he hosts two major annual events — Praise Reloaded mid-year and LoveGift in December — both of which have become significant fixtures on Ghana’s gospel music calendar.
Joe Mettle is proof that gospel music from Ghana can stand confidently on the world stage — rooted in African identity, driven by genuine worship, and impossible to ignore.
