Not every person grows up with the odds in their favour. Preye Odede grew up in Bayelsa State with a father who was absent, a mother holding everything together, and music as the one constant that never left. That background didn’t hinder him. It became the very thing that gave his music its weight.
Born on June 16, 1990, in Isampou Ekeremor, Bayelsa State, Preye Odede grew up as the third child among seven siblings. His early years were marked by difficulty — his father left the family, leaving his mother to raise the children alone.
Despite those challenges, music was always present. He remained connected to his Christian roots throughout his formative years, actively participating in church activities, particularly as a choir member. He showed interest in music from as early as age 13, gradually perfecting his craft while singing backup for major gospel ministers in Port Harcourt.
Preye announced his presence in the gospel music industry in 2011 with his hit single “Biko,” and later released his maiden album “My Script” in 2012.
The inspiration behind “Ebezina” is a true life experience Preye encountered during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) period in Nigeria.
“Ebezina” — which translates to “Don’t Cry” in Igbo — became a song of comfort for people walking through grief, uncertainty, and loss. Its heartfelt lyrics and soulful vocals touched the hearts of millions and made it one of the most beloved Nigerian gospel songs of its generation.
Today Preye Odede is the CEO of Script Planet, which includes his record label Script Music. He is also the convener of “The Move” concert — a platform that continues to gather believers and expand his ministry beyond music.
His music blends contemporary gospel with traditional African sounds, earning him awards including the Loveworld Music Award for Worship Song of the Year.
From a fatherless home in Bayelsa to stages across Nigeria and beyond — Preye Odede’s story is living proof that the most powerful gospel music often comes from the most unlikely places.
