Distribution Deals, Royalties and Copyright Part 1

Hello, dear readers! I hope you’re all doing well. Today, we’ll delve into some important concepts like distribution deals, royalties and copyright.

These are terms that many of us may have heard but might not fully understand. Let’s clarify what these terms mean and explore their importance.

What is a Distribution Deal?

A distribution deal is an agreement between an artist or label and a company that facilitates the availability of music to the public, both in digital and physical formats. Essentially, these companies serve as the connection between the artist’s music and listeners on platforms such as Spotify, Boomplay, Apple Music, and YouTube.

In the past, record labels were responsible for all aspects of music, including production, promotion, and distribution of CDs. However, the evolution of the music industry into the digital age has transformed this.

Now, independent gospel musicians can utilize platforms like DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, and other platforms to upload their songs directly. This means that artists can successfully distribute their music on a global scale without needing to be affiliated with a major label.

The Different Types of Distribution Deals

Digital distribution has become the primary method for most artists today. By using a distributor artists can upload their tracks and, after paying a one-time or yearly fee, have their music placed on various streaming platforms. This way, they earn royalties whenever their songs are streamed or downloaded.

Alternatively, artists may consider label distribution deals, which are typically offered by record labels or their distributors.

While these deals might take a percentage of the artist’s revenue, they often provide valuable support in areas like promotion, playlist pitching, and even funding.

It’s also important to note that some distribution agreements include exclusivity clauses, preventing artists from uploading their music elsewhere. Therefore, it is crucial for musicians to carefully read the terms of such agreements to ensure they don’t jeopardize their control over their catalog or better still get a lawyer.

Key Things to Watch Out For

Royalty Split: Who gets what cut when your song starts making money?

Ownership of Masters: Does the distributor get any rights to your master recordings? Ideally, you want to keep ownership of your masters.

Payment Frequency: How often will you see your money monthly, quarterly, or once a year?

Exclusivity: Can you post the same track on different platforms if you decide to switch things up.

A Reality Check

In Nigeria, it’s pretty clear that distribution and royalty issues can stir up problems. Before uploading your music, it’s crucial to recognize that distribution goes beyond simply placing your song on platforms like Spotify.

Reflect on the following questions: Do you know who owns your masters? Are you aware of the percentage you receive from streaming? Can you monitor your revenue in real-time? Have you registered with a copyright or royalty organization?

If your answers lean towards “no,” it’s wise to pause and educate yourself.

Understanding these aspects is vital, as launching your music without the necessary knowledge can lead to frustration.
