The Afro Gospel music scene is growing fast across Africa—especially in Nigeria. The sound is vibrant, the lyrics are powerful, and the message is unapologetically about Jesus. But let’s be honest, as much as ministry is the focus, the reality is that artists still need money to record, produce, distribute, and live. Ministry takes resources, and money is one of them.
Unfortunately, many Afro Gospel artists in Nigeria and Africa still struggle to monetize their music because they think, “It’s gospel, so it should be free.” But here’s the truth, there are legitimate, God-honoring ways to earn from your songs while still keeping the focus on the Kingdom.
Let’s look at three practical ways you can do this.
1. Streaming Platforms Are Your Friend
Platforms like Boomplay, Audiomack, Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube are goldmines if you use them well. In Nigeria and across Africa, people are consuming music on their phones more than ever before. Afro Gospel artists should take advantage of this.

To earn from streaming:
- Upload your music through distributors like DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby. They help you get your songs on all major platforms.
- Build a loyal fan base by consistently sharing your music links on social media and engaging with your audience.
- Don’t underestimate YouTube—even your live rehearsals, lyric videos, or behind-the-scenes clips can generate views and income over time.
It might start small, but with consistency, your streaming income can grow into something meaningful.
2. Live Concerts, Worship Nights, and Ticketed Events
Africa loves live music, and Nigerians love experiences. Afro Gospel artists can make good money by hosting worship concerts, live music sessions, or even joint events with other gospel artists.

Here’s the thing—people are willing to pay for an event that inspires them, especially if they know the artist has great energy and an uplifting message. You can:
- Sell tickets at affordable prices (and offer VIP passes for fans who want a special experience).
- Sell merchandise at the venue—T-shirts, caps, and branded items with your lyrics or album art.
- Partner with churches, Christian fellowships, or even faith-based brands to sponsor the event.
Not only does this bring in income, but it also grows your visibility and deepens your connection with your fans.
3. Licensing and Collaborations
Your songs can go beyond the church walls. You can earn by licensing your music for Christian movies, YouTube channels, podcasts, adverts, or even faith-based TV shows.
Also, collaborations can be a great way to share audiences and boost streams. Imagine an Afro Gospel artist in Nigeria collaborating with a gospel rapper in South Africa or a worship leader in Kenya—that’s cross-audience exposure that can mean more streams, more bookings, and more revenue.
To make this work, you need:
- A professional recording of your songs.
- A clear brand identity so people know what you stand for.
- Relationships in the industry—network with producers, filmmakers, and other gospel artists.
4. Caller Tunes
The first time I heard about making money from caller tunes, it was from the secular artist Akon. More recently, gospel artist Gaise Baba showed us that the gospel music industry can tap into this same opportunity: we just need the right information.
Getting your song on caller tunes may sound like a herculean task, but with proper management and the right distribution partners, it’s achievable. The best part? It’s passive income. Once it’s set up, every time someone sets your song as their caller tune, you get paid. Imagine thousands of people hearing your music before they even answer a call — that’s both ministry and money working together.
Afro Gospel is not just a genre; it’s a movement. And like every movement, it thrives when its creatives are well-supported and financially empowered. Dear artist, your music is valuable — so treat it like a gift worth stewarding.
Ministry and monetization can co-exist beautifully when your heart is in the right place and your strategy is solid. Go ahead and bless lives, and don’t be afraid to earn while doing it.
