Singing Scripture: When Gospel Songs Come Straight from the Bible

I’m not a gospel music minister or an artist, but one thing I strongly believe is this: the lyrics of a gospel song matter.

A gospel song may come through direct inspiration by the Holy Spirit. It may also come directly from the Scriptures where the words are lifted almost verbatim from the Bible itself. But whichever way it comes, one thing remains non-negotiable:

Every gospel song must pass the test of Scripture.

In other words, the lyrics must never contradict what is written in the Word of God.

And that brings us to something beautiful – songs that don’t just reflect Scripture, but are Scripture.

Today, we’re looking at some well-known songs both indigenous and international whose lyrics are taken directly from the Bible. I like to call this:

“Singing Scripture.”

1. As the Deer Pants

This popular worship song is in Psalm 42:1:

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God.”

The song captures the psalmist’s longing for God. Just as a deer cannot survive without water, the believer cannot thrive without God’s presence.

2. Great Is the Lord

A powerful praise song taken from Psalm 48:1:

“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of His holiness.”

3. Let God Arise

A strong prayer and warfare chant drawn from Psalm 68: 1a

“Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered.”

Many believers sing this during moments of spiritual warfare or intercession.

4. Bless the Lord, O My Soul

Taken from Psalm 103: 1

“Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name.”

5. This Is the Day the Lord Has Made

For many of us, this song brings back memories from morning assemblies, church services, and especially for Anglicans during the Holy Communion service when we are reading from the liturgy.

The lyrics come from Psalm 118: 24

“This is the day which the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

6. Worthy Is the Lamb

A popular song by Hillsong Worship, this song is drawn from Revelation 5: 12

“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.”

7. Alleluia, For the Lord God Reigns

This song is a triumphant proclamation. of God’s sovereignty taken from Revelation 19: 6

“Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.”

8. Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God

A song of repentance taken from Psalm 51:10–12.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thine presence and take not thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of my salvation, and uphold me with thy free spirit.”

9. I Will Enter His Gates with Thanksgiving

From Psalm 100: 4

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise.”

This joyful praise song reminds believers that thanksgiving is the proper posture for approaching God.
