Did You Know Christian Music Has Been in Nigeria for Over 500 Years?
The story goes further back than most people realise. Portuguese Catholic missionaries introduced Christian liturgical music to areas including the ancient Benin Kingdom and Warri in the 16th century. However, what we now recognise as distinctly Nigerian gospel music developed much later, particularly through missionary activity in the 19th century and the incorporation of indigenous languages and musical traditions.
Did You Know the First Known Nigerian to Record Gospel Songs Was an Anglican?
Reverend Josiah Jesse Ransome-Kuti, an Anglican clergyman and music composer from Abeokuta, is widely recognised as the first known Nigerian to record gospel songs.
In 1922, he travelled to London and recorded 43 songs for Zonophone, including Yoruba Christian hymns and sacred songs. He is regarded as a pioneer of Nigerian gospel music and was also the grandfather of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
