One Community, One Christmas: A Celebration of Unity, Culture and Community in Northampton

Last Christmas, something special happened in Northampton. Families, young people, community leaders, and local organisations came together for an event that truly lived up to its name, One Community, One Christmas.

Held on Saturday, 20 December 2025, the event was more than just a festive gathering. It was created as a warm, inclusive space where people from different backgrounds could celebrate the season together, connect with one another, and feel a stronger sense of belonging.

Why Was The Event Organised?

The idea behind One Community, One Christmas was simple: to reduce isolation, bring people together, and build trust between residents and the services that support them. Christmas can be a lonely time for many, and this event was designed to remind people that community still matters and that no one has to celebrate alone.

The People Behind the Vision

The event was convened by Oluwafunke Iroko, who also serves as the dance teacher for the youth group Davidic Dance Tribe. Through her work with young people, Oluwafunke focuses on building confidence, encouraging engagement, and inspiring creativity through the arts.

She partnered with Shine Development Concept CIC to host the event, with funding support from the Northamptonshire Community Fund, which awarded a grant to make the programme possible.
Other partners included:
1. Impact Voluntary Northamptonshire
2. RCCG Holy Ghost Zone
3. Sophia Newton (professional dancer)
4. New Covenant Church.

Together, these organisations helped create an evening that blended faith, culture, creativity, and community engagement.

Highlights from the Event

The programme was lively, and family-friendly. The Davidic Dance Tribe performed two dance pieces, a salsa dance and an Afro dance and the audience didn’t just watch; they joined in.

One of the standout moments was an interactive Afro dance session, where attendees were taught simple dance steps and encouraged to participate. It was joyful, relaxed, and it brought everyone closer together.

There were also traditional Christmas elements, including music and moments of reflection that reminded everyone of the season’s message of peace, hope, and goodwill.

Community Leaders in Attendance

The event welcomed several notable guests, including:
Councillor Jane Birch, Mayor of Northampton.

Marianne Kimani, Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner
Representatives of the Northamptonshire Police.

Their presence reinforced the event’s goal of strengthening relationships between the community and key institutions.

Health, Information and Impact

Beyond celebration, the event also made space for important conversations. Oluwafunke Iroko, in her role as a community health expert, shared valuable information on immunisation and directed attendees to relevant platforms for further guidance.

In total, the event welcomed about 108 attendees, each leaving with not just festive memories, but a renewed sense of connection.

More Than a Christmas Event

One Community, One Christmas was a reminder that community is built through shared experiences such like this. It showed what’s possible when people come together with intention, generosity, and a shared vision for unity.
And for everyone who attended, it was a Christmas they won’t forget…
