Every year on October 11, the world marks International Day of the Girl Child.
It is a day to celebrate the strength, creativity, and dreams of girls everywhere. In AfroGospel, one name stands out when we think of girls who started young and made a lasting mark: Benita Okojie.
Benita began her music journey at just 10 years old with her first song, Osemudiamen. The song spread across Nigeria like wildfire, and many of us can still remember singing it in school, at church, or at home.
More than 16 years later, Benita is still making beautiful music. Her latest release, Ayo, carries the same joyful spirit we first heard in her voice as a child. From a little girl with a big sound, she has grown into a woman still inspiring people through Afrogospel music.
Benita’s story is a reminder that when girls are encouraged to use their gifts, they can shine brightly and carry others along with them. She has shown that age is no barrier when God gives a gift.
As we celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child, we not only honor Benita but also cheer for every young girl using her voice to share the Gospel. Girls who remind us that the future of AfroGospel is very bright.
Today, we see that same spark in young voices like Iseoluwa Abidemi, the 20 year old gospel singer who started singing at five and released her first single at just 13.

There’s also Uchechi Treasure, a teenage singer and songwriter with millions of streams on her gospel albums.

And Ara Jesus Gold, the energetic five year old that loves to sing and lead AfroGospel praise.

These girls are proof that the next generation is ready to carry the torch.
So here’s our challenge to you: share this with a girl in your life who has musical talent. Remind her that she can grow, shine, and inspire others just like Benita.
Happy International Day of the Girl Child!
