In continuation of our series on legends in Americam Gospel music. Today we will be looking at another individual who is a worship leader and singer whose influence has run for many decades – Ron Kennoly.
Early Life & Musical Foundation
Ron Kenoly was born on December 6, 1944, in Coffeyville, Kansas, and his main goal in life is to create a space where people can really feel God’s presence. After finishing high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he sang with a Top-40 style band and got into some secular music, starting out with a group called The Mellow Fellows. Some family issues made him step away from that band, and he later dove into an R&B career under the name Ron Keith, scoring some hits like “Soul Vaccination.”
Turning Toward Gospel Music
Kenoly experienced a major spiritual shift and this made him move from making secular music to focusing on a Christ-centered music. In 1983, he dropped his first Christian album, ‘You Ought to Listen to This’. His big break came soon after that when he became the worship leader at Jubilee Christian Center in San Jose, California. He later took on roles as Music Pastor and, by 1993, became the Ambassador of Music, helping churches around the world create well-rounded worship experiences. Kenoly also has a strong educational background, holding a music degree from Alameda College, a Master of Divinity from Faith Bible College, and a Doctorate of Ministry in Sacred Music from Friends International Christian University.
Musical Impact
Kenoly’s worship style is super joyful and gets the congregation involved, often with choir backing. His live album ‘Lift Him Up’, was a huge success and it sold faster than any gospel album at the time. Another album, Welcome Home, released in 1996 and produced by Tom Brooks, received a lot of praise, becoming Billboard’s top indie contemporary Christian album and snagging a Gospel Music Association Dove Award for Praise and Worship Album of the Year in 1997.

Global Ministry & Recognition
Kenoly’s ministry has made its way to over 100 countries, through live concerts, recordings, and teaching. His upbeat vibe has taken him all over the world—from church services to worship events in Africa and beyond. He’s received a bunch of accolades, like the New Breed Legacy Award in 2013 and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the UK Gospel Music Awards, plus he’s been recognized as one of the top 50 Black Pentecostal influencers.
Sadly, on February 3, 2026, Ron Kenoly passed on at the age of 81, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of worship that continues to inspire believers around the world.
