It’s hard to believe it’s been almost two decades since Midnight Crew, one of the biggest names in Nigeria’s gospel music industry, took the industry by storm with their unforgettable hit, “Igwe.” Time really flies! After spending years exploring their individual paths and expressions, the talented members of Midnight Crew came together to celebrate their 20th anniversary.
Midnight Crew was born way back in 2001, when four incredibly talented vocalists—Pat Uwaje-King, Mike Abdul, Odunayo Ojo, and Gbenga Oyebola—banded together while they were all students at Yaba College of Technology. Their sound was a fantastic blend of Afrocentric vibes and contemporary gospel. But, it was their smash hit “Igwe” that brought them into the spotlight, earning them both national and international recognition.

After hitting it big, the group didn’t slow down one bit! They kept bringing us those inspiring gospel tunes such as ‘kene Jesu’, ‘surulere’. These were songs that really lift your spirit, but as time rolled on, each of the members started to explore their own paths a bit more and have individual expressions. Mike Abdul really made a name for himself with his super lively Fuji-infused gospel sound – it’s hard not to get up and dance when his tracks come on. The same goes for Pat Uwaje-King, Odunayo Ojo and Gbenga Oyebola.
Over the years, Midnight Crew has really made a name for themselves when it comes to celebrating their anniversaries with some awesome music releases. Back in 2018, for their 17th anniversary, they treated their fans to not one, but two amazing singles: “Good God” and “Congratulations.” Fast forward to their milestone of 20 years in 2021, and they decided to switch things up a bit with how they celebrated.

Instead of dropping a new hit song like everyone was expecting, the group decided to take a different route this time. They went for a chill interview where they reflected on their journey so far and shared some insights on how they’ve grown over the years. During the interview, the Midnight Crew opened up and shared some heartfelt stories about how they got started, the bumps they faced along the way, and the victories they’ve celebrated. What really caught my attention, though, was their take on what lies ahead. When they talked about the next phase, it was clear that they’re thinking about legacy building. They want to focus on guiding the next generation of gospel musicians
You know, it’s pretty interesting—while there has been all this buzz and chatter in the media about the possibility of a U.S. tour, the group hasn’t actually confirmed any of that. They’ve made it clear that their main focus right now isn’t really about diving into another big musical project. Instead, they’re really concentrated on making sure the impact of their ministry lasts well beyond their active years. It’s all about leaving a lasting legacy.
