121 Selah: The emerging contemporary afro-gospel choir

When you hear the word Selah, what comes to your mind? For me, Selah brings to mind the book of Psalms in the Bible. However, we won’t be delving into Biblical references today.  We are going to be looking at a choral group called ‘121 Selah‘.

From their remarkable journey in the Old Mutual Amazing Voices competition to their extraordinary talent, this group of gifted musicians is on the brink of greatness. This group is a contemporary afro gospel choir that has taken the music scene by storm. Composed of several individual talents, this group has made a resounding impact with their awe-inspiring performances that dominated the Old Mutual Amazing Voices Competition. 

The group consists of PD Wallson, a visionary leader, Praximus, Odulate MoyosoreOluwa, Peculiar Chioma, Remii, Fasipe Ikeoluwa and Shammah John.

So how did they meet?

These talented individuals came together on March 17, 2013, at the Federal University of Agriculture where PD Wallson’s passion for Choral Music led him to seek out the right people to form this exceptional band. While some members have come and gone, some members of the group have remained steadfast, United by their dedication to excellence. This dedication to excellence was evident in their notable display at the Old Mutual Amazing Voices Competition where they became the first choral group to win the ‘Golden Voice Award’. 

Now this is an award that is given to the best-performing group every night of the competition. The competition served as a platform for them to showcase their exceptional talent, and their awe-inspiring performances not only won the hearts of the judges but also garnered a strong following of supporters.

 

Although they didn’t emerge as the ultimate winners of the competition, thousands of music fans have been drawn to the group’s kind of music as a result of their exciting performance and this has ushered in a new era for the classic art of Gospel music. Since their debut in 2013, the group has continued to evolve, embracing new influences and exploring innovative ways to express their faith through music. Over the years 121 Selah has had the opportunity of collaborating with renowned gospel artists in the gospel music industry. Their collaborations with artists such as Judikay, Nosa, Ty Bello, and many others have further solidified their position as rising stars in the genre. These partnerships have allowed them to expand their musical horizons and share their unique sound with an even wider audience.

 

While some members have transitioned to pursue their paths, the core members have stayed committed to their shared vision and continue to inspire audiences with their harmonious voices and heartfelt performances. Beyond their musical pursuits, 121 Selah aims to make a profound impact on people’s lives by reminding them that Christ should be their greatest joy and driving force. Their music serves as a powerful medium to convey this message of hope, faith, and love to a world in need of inspiration and spiritual upliftment.
