The Voice Behind Way Maker: Sinach

When you think of powerful worship song singers that have made waves far beyond the shores of Nigeria, one name that immediately stands out is Sinach. One of her iconic songs “Way Maker” has transcended borders and been sung in different places all around the world. Sinach’s influence in the gospel music industry is truly undeniable, and she’s become a beacon of inspiration for many. But have you ever wondered how she got to this remarkable point in her career?

Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, widely known as Sinach, was born on March 30, 1972, in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Sinach’s journey to global gospel stardom didn’t start with music as she initially pursued a completely different path studying Physics at the University of Port Harcourt.

While studying at the University of Port Harcourt, Sinach joined the choir at Christ Embassy, led by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome. This church community played a huge role in shaping her musical journey. By 2008, she released her first album, officially launching her career in gospel music.

As a gifted songwriter, Sinach has penned numerous hit songs throughout her career and released several albums. Some of her most iconic tracks include “Way Maker”, “I Know Who I Am”,The Name of Jesus”, “He Did It Again”, and “Great Are You Lord” and many more.

Sinach is happily married to Joseph Egbu, and their beautiful journey together began when they tied the knot back in 2014. After a few years, the couple joyfully welcomed their precious daughter Rhoda, in 2019.

In 2020 she made history by becoming the first African artist to claim the top spot on the Billboard Christian Songwriters chart. And guess what? She held that incredible position for a staggering 12 weeks. In the same year, she snagged the Dove Award for Song of the Year with her hit song “Way Maker.” This win was historic because she became the first Nigerian to take home that honor. And it’s not just that alone, she was honored by the US Congress in 2021 for her significant contributions to gospel music.

In 2024, she found herself in the middle of a ₦5 billion lawsuit over her smash hit, “Way Maker.” This happened when a music producer named Michael Oluwole, also known as Maye, came forward claiming he played a huge role in the creation of the song but never received the credit or the royalties he thought he deserved. So, naturally, he decided to take it to court, and what followed was nothing short of a legal saga that’s making waves as one of the biggest copyright disputes in Nigerian gospel music history.

As if the legal battle was not enough, early 2025 brought another twist as Sinach along with other gospel artists like Frank Edwards, Joe Praiz and Eben left Christ Embassy. Despite the drama, her songs continue to touch lives, and her influence keeps growing. As for what’s next, she’s still actively releasing music, leading worship sessions, and ministering worldwide. Whether she’s performing in Nigeria, the US, or somewhere in Europe, one thing is certain, Sinach’s music will always be a voice for generations to come.
