Jekalyn Carr: A Born Star

Like Tasha Cobbs, Jekalyn Carr is also another American gospel singer and songwriter. She was born in 1997, has two siblings, and her parents are Jennifer Carr and Allen Lindsey.

It was noted that at such young age of 5, Carr began serving in her church’s choir, and members of her family never failed to acknowledge that she’s always had a decent ear for music. Jekalyn Carr is a self-taught vocalist and became a main chorister in her neighborhood church. At age 11, she was already called to serve in ministry, both as a speaker and singer.

Her music is really a powerful one! She’s got these amazing vocals, and her songs are always so encouraging, with messages of faith and inspiration. You can tell she’s really passionate about her faith, and she loves to share positive messages. Some of her popular tunes include ‘Greater Is Coming,’ ‘You’re Bigger,’ ‘You Will Win,’ and ‘Jehovah Jireh’—they’re really good!”

Isn’t it amazing that at 15, her single “Greater Is Coming” hits the Billboard’s Gospel Music Top Ten? And that’s when she really started focusing on music professionally. Then, at 16, she won her first Stellar Award. In 2021, she made history as the first gospel artist inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame. Talk about impressive!

Respectively in the year 2019 and 2021, during the 34th and 36th Annual Stellar Awards, she won the Traditional Female Vocalist of the Year, Traditional CD of the Year (One Nation Under God), and Traditional Album of the Year (Changing Your Story). In 2020 during the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, Jekalyn was also nominated for the Best Gospel Performance/Song, even though she didn’t win the award.

By the way, my favourite song of Jekalyn Carr that I really love is “God of War”. The song was released in 2023, where she featured Elevation Rhythm. The song itself is a powerful declaration of faith and trust in God’s strength, especially during tough times. And it’s not just a song; it’s almost an anthem – it’s the kind of song you put on when you need a boost, when you’re facing a challenge, or when you just want to feel empowered. Jekalyn Carr delivers it with such conviction that you can’t help but believe every word.

Another song of hers that has made waves from 2018 to date, and across the globe is, “I Am a Winner”. The lyrics are simple but effective, repeating affirmations that really stick with you. It’s the kind of song you can put on in the morning to start your day with a boost, or whenever you need a reminder that you’ve got what it takes. See some of the lyrics of the song:

“I won’t be down, ’cause I’m here to win

The voice of darkness, it has to bow

No weapon that the enemy form

Shall ever prosper!

I’m undefeated with Jesus (I am a winner)

I’m undefeated with Jesus (I am a winner)

I am a winner (I am a winner)”

Listen to I am Winner here

It is undeniably evident that her songs always revolve around victory, which of course is found in Jesus Christ. Jekalyn Carr has been featured as a vocalist on songs by artists including Maverick City Music, Leanna Crawford, Kurt Carr, and Benjamin Dube. She was featured on “One Hallelujah” with Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Erica Campbell, Israel Houghton, and Jonathan McReynolds, which won the Best Gospel Performance/Song Grammy in 2025.

Beyond the sphere of music and songwriting, Jekalyn Carr is also an entrepreneur and author. We celebrate a multifaceted woman who has contributed her quotas, and still in the business of doing so into different sectors, having being a source of inspiration to many other young people.
