Feeling a bit down? We all do sometimes. The name might ring a bell for its association with the hit song “Pray for Me” by Darey. But this incredible choir’s legacy extends far beyond a single collaboration. However not all of us know quite much about this awesome choir that is recognized on the global stage so today we will be taking out time to look at this choir and also have a glance at reasons why you might want to add their music to your collection.

So, let’s get started.

Globally Recognized Talent

Forget world domination through military might. The Soweto Gospel Choir is winning hearts on a global scale.  From prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall to local community centers, their music resonates with audiences worldwide.  They’ve even performed for icons like the Pope and Nelson Mandela. Impressive, right?

A Unique Musical Blend

Imagine the perfect musical fusion. The Soweto Gospel Choir seamlessly blends traditional African gospel with reggae, Neggro Spirituals as well as American popular music and even a touch of pop.  The result?  A sound that’s both familiar and refreshingly new, guaranteed to get your toes tapping. This reminds me of their collaboration with Steve Crowns on his song ‘Mighty God’. While the song is over a decade, it is still a beautiful song to listen to.

A Legacy of Excellence

Formed in Soweto, South Africa, in 2003 by David Mulovhedzi, Beverly Bryer, and producers Andrew Kay, David Vigo, and Cliff Hocking after the end of the apartheid and the return to democracy in South Africa. The Soweto Gospel Choir has grown into a more than 30-member ensemble. Blending elements of African gospel, Negro spirituals, reggae, and American popular music, they’ve garnered international acclaim. Their albums Blessed, African Spirit, and Freedom clinched the Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album in 2006, 2007, and 2019, respectively.

International Impact

Their influence extends beyond music. The group performed at the first of the 46664 concerts for Nelson Mandela and has since toured internationally multiple times. They’ve graced events like Live Earth and contributed to notable projects like the soundtrack of Pixar’s WALL-E, earning nominations for prestigious awards like the Golden Globe and Academy Award.
