Here’s Why You Should Listen to Batsogile Lovederia “Rebecca” Malope

Hey there! We’ve been having a blast exploring the world of South African Gospel music for the past few weeks. It’s been amazing to discover the rich history and incredible talent that exists there. As the month comes to a close, we wanted to share one last amazing piece with you.

Have you ever heard of Batsogile Lovederia Malope, also known as Rebecca Malope? She is a legendary figure in the music industry, with a career spanning over three decades. Her music has touched the hearts of millions of people around the world, and her voice is truly something special. With 36 albums to her name and over 10 million copies sold, she has cemented her place as one of the best-selling Christian artists of all time. Her music has become synonymous with church services and special occasions, and it’s no wonder why. It’s impossible not to feel uplifted and inspired when you listen to her soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Whether you’re a fan of gospel music or not, Rebecca Malope is a name that you should definitely know.

Rebecca, had an unusual start to her career. Her reign as the queen of gospel began in 1984 when she and her sister Cynthia ran away from home. The next year, they entered the Shell Road To Fame television contest with their band, but sadly, they were disqualified.

Rebecca did not give up on her dreams and two years later, she tried again as a solo artist. Her hard work and determination paid off as she won the title of best vocalist in 1987. She then released her pop debut album, Sthembele Kuwe’, which unfortunately didn’t do well. But she didn’t let that discourage her and followed it up with her second album, Woza Lovely’, in 1989.

In the same year, Rebecca released her next album, Thank You Very Much’, which marked her transition to gospel music. The album was divided between disco beats and pop-gospel songs and it became an instant hit. Both Sthembele Kuwe and Thank You Very Much achieved platinum certification.

Rebecca is a highly recognized gospel icon in South Africa, continentally and globally. She was the first Black artist and woman to perform at the State theater in Pretoria after the banning of apartheid. Additionally, she was the first South African to have a song included in the American Christian Churches hymnbook. She has performed in more than 20 countries worldwide and has been honored with two honorary doctorates for her contribution to music. Notably, she sang at Nelson Mandela’s Presidential inauguration in 1994.

Today, at age 53, she is regarded as South Africa’s greatest living gospel legend and is appreciated by both older and younger generations. The older generation remembers her as the only gospel artist of their time, while the younger generation sees her as relatable, especially after she served as a judge on Mzansi Magic’s Sunday singing competition, Clash of the Choirs.
