Here is What We Think About Samsong

Gospel music in Nigeria has been blessed with many talented artists and one of them is SamSong. With a career spanning over two decades. Samson Uche Mogekwu, better known as Samsong, is a popular Nigerian gospel artist. For more than twenty years, his incredible voice has filled churches, concerts, and radio stations.

Born on November 30, 1974, in Delta State, Nigeria, Samsong is the seventh child in a family of nine. While in high school, he began singing and even adopted the stage name “Samsong” —a clever play on his real name, Samson. His passion for music grew, and he continued honing his skills while studying Accounting at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State.

It’s pretty interesting that Samsong originally wanted to be the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He even had a short stint working with places like the Central Bank and Golf Bank. However, a growing sense of unfulfillment redirected him back to his first love: music. Before going solo, Samsong was part of a gospel quartet called Praise Creation. The band was signed to the Ivory Music Label and launched their first album, Best of Life, in 1996. The album was well-received, but like many groups, Praise Creation eventually disbanded, leading Samsong to pursue a solo career.  After the group disbanded, Samsong launched his debut album, “Count Your Blessings”, in 2002. The project earned him ‘The Psalmist Award’ that same year, marking the beginning of his rise as a leading gospel artist.

Following that success, he released other notable albums such as “Still Counting” in 2004. This one earned him several awards such as Best Male Vocalist of the Year” at the Today’s Music Award, and in 2005, he took home the same title at The Amen Awards. “The World of My Dreams” was another album that came out in 2007. This album  featured collaborations with top Nigerian artists including Onyeka Onwenu and Styl Plus. That same year, he was honored with the Grace Honorary Award for Excellence.

Samsong’s music has also gone international with his music earning him a nomination for “Best Gospel Artist” at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEA) in New York City in 2008. He embarked on an international tour, performing in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Germany.  Samsong continued releasing music, dropping Church Boy Reloaded in 2015, On Top of The World in 2015, Bianule in 2016, My Sound of Worship in 2017 and Master of The World in 2023. His latest single in 2025 is The Name of Jesus (Original) where he is featured alongside Mavellous Dayi and Marvel Joks.

One of his most notable tours was in August 2009, when he performed in Seychelles. His visit was so significant that he was personally received by the country’s Vice President, Joseph Belmont. Over the years, he has shared stages with international gospel greats such as Marvin Winans, Donnie McClurkin, and Panam Percy Paul.

Samsong is married to Sarah Mogekwu, and the couple is blessed with children. He is also the founder of Boogie Down Concept, a gospel music label focused on discovering and mentoring upcoming gospel artists in Nigeria.
