When we talk about gospel artists, we often discuss their music, their impact, their ministry and the lives being touched through their songs. We celebrate their achievements, look forward to their next releases and sometimes follow almost every aspect of their lives on social media.
But beyond the music and the public ministry, there is a person who also needs guidance, correction and accountability.
One thing every gospel artist should understand is that being gifted, anointed or called into ministry does not exempt anyone from accountability.
There should be people in your life whom you are accountable to. People who can ask you difficult questions, speak into your decisions and call you to order when they notice that something is not right. People who are not afraid to correct you simply because you are popular or because your ministry has blessed them.
Sometimes, we surround ourselves with people who celebrate everything we do, but we forget that we also need people who can tell us when we are getting things wrong.
A gospel artist can minister to thousands of people and still need someone to check on their personal walk with God. They can lead others in worship and still need spiritual guidance themselves. Being able to minister to others does not mean you have everything figured out.
This is why having spiritual structures in one’s life is important. There should be spiritual leaders, mentors and mature believers who can provide guidance, offer counsel and correct us when necessary. Proverbs 11:14 reminds us that there is safety in the multitude of counsellors.
However, accountability is not about having someone control your life or make every decision for you. Healthy accountability should be built on love, trust, godly wisdom and the truth of God’s Word. The goal is not to control or humiliate anyone but to help them remain grounded and grow in their walk with God.
And this conversation should not be limited to gospel artists. Every believer needs this kind of structure. Whether you are a pastor, a business owner, a student, a music minister or simply a Christian going about your daily life, you need people who can speak into your life and help you stay on the right path.
So, beyond the people who listen to your songs, attend your meetings or celebrate your ministry, who are the people who can genuinely speak into your life?
Don’t just build a ministry; build a life that can sustain it. And make room for people who love you enough to tell you the truth, even when it is uncomfortable.
