Have you ever heard an AfroGospel song in the Hausa language? Well, we recently came across a song titled “Tapasa” by Godfrey Gad, and we thought we should share it with you!
If you have been on TikTok lately, you may have come across the song. “Tapasa” has been gaining attention on the platform, introducing more people to a sound that brings Northern Nigerian culture into the AfroGospel space.
Godfrey Gad is an AfroGospel artist from Kaduna, Northern Nigeria. His song “Tapasa” blends contemporary Afrobeats rhythms with the language and cultural identity of the North.
“Tapasa” is a Hausa word meaning to boil over, to burn, or to break forth. The song carries a message of breakthrough, with Godfrey describing it as a declaration of inevitable breakthrough.
Beyond its catchy sound, the song communicates a message of faith, expectation and breaking forth. It brings together an energetic beat and a message that encourages listeners to look forward to what lies ahead.
Over the years, we have seen AfroGospel artists emerge from different parts of Nigeria, each bringing their own sounds, languages and cultural influences into the music. But personally, this is one of the first times I have come across an AfroGospel song from the Arewa side that has caught my attention like this, and I absolutely love it!
One thing I find exciting about “Tapasa” is that it reminds us that AfroGospel does not have to sound the same everywhere. Our languages, cultures and musical traditions can all find expression in the gospel music we create and enjoy.
The growing attention the song is receiving on TikTok also shows how social media can help introduce listeners to music they might not ordinarily discover. And who knows? This could encourage more listeners to explore AfroGospel artists and sounds from Northern Nigeria.
For now, “Tapasa” is definitely one to check out if you enjoy discovering new sounds in AfroGospel.
