Throwback & Reflections: How Sunday School Songs Shaped Our Childhood

Before many of us could explain salvation, we were already singing about it.

Before we understood spiritual warfare, we were shouting “Jesus power, super power.”

Before we knew what theology even meant, our Sunday school songs were already shaping how we saw God.

And honestly, looking back now, it’s something worth appreciating.

For many Nigerians who grew up in church, music was one of the first ways we encountered faith. Long before deep sermons or personal bible study, there were songs.

Simple lyrics, dramatic choreography, and classrooms full of children trying to sing louder than the person beside them.

At the time, they just felt like fun songs.

But as adults, many of us are beginning to realise that those songs carried truths much deeper than we understood then.

Take songs like:

“Read your Bible, pray every day…”

As children, it was just another energetic chorus for us to clap along to.

But now we understand that it was teaching us about consistency, spiritual discipline, and daily fellowship with God.

Do you remember

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…”

Back then, it was exciting because everybody sang loudly, and there was a high chance biscuits would be shared after service.

But today it sounds completely different. The song carries a theme of boldness, visibility, evangelism, and not hiding your faith.

Another one is

“I’m a soldier in the army of the Lord, I’m a general in the Lord’s army!”

As children, we marched around classrooms dramatically like we were in actual military training.

Now, many of us understand ideas like perseverance, spiritual warfare, endurance, and standing firm in faith.

And honestly, one of the funniest examples has to be:

“Jesus power, super power.”

At the time, it just felt loud and exciting. Children’s church absolutely loved that song.

But underneath the excitement was a declaration many of us still hold onto today: the supremacy of Christ over every other power.

Even songs about God’s love carried more weight than we realised then.

“Jesus loves me, this I know…”

As children, it felt comforting.

As adults, we understand how foundational that truth really is. Entire faith journeys are built on understanding the love of God properly.

What makes these songs special is how simple the lyrics are, and how they stayed with us.

Years later, many adults can still remember the melodies word for word, the dance steps, the tiny plastic chairs, the joy of Children’s Day presentations and the chaos of rehearsal sessions.

Something about those songs settled deeply into our memory.

And maybe that’s why music remains so powerful in Christian culture today.

Truth enters differently when it is sung. You remember it longer, and you repeat it without even trying.

Over to you.

What childhood gospel song still lives in your head rent free today?
