Today’s spotlight is on Chidinma, the ex-secular singer who once won MTN Project Fame. Chidinma Ekile, who is known professionally as Chidinma, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress. A native of Imo State, Chidinma was born in Ketu, Kosofe, Lagos State.
In 2010, she gained prominence after winning the third season of Project Fame West Africa. We must agree that many things have happened since she returned to the Christian music industry. Some people said she made a mistake and ought not to bother singing. However, I personally think it is a great move. According to her story, she made a good choice because she found Jesus, who is her first love.
Today, we are looking at some of her songs from last year and how she has evolved. So, follow me on this journey:
Jehovah Overdo
To be candid, when she released this song last year, the internet and people got talking. While analysing this song, I also tried to use her former credentials as a Project Fame winner, but I had to act like a Christian. Chidinma’s biggest priority when she sang the song was not to get popular or revive her secular music career; rather, I believed it was a state of reflection. She has reflected on her past and how much God has come through for her.

Love Me First
Last month, she sang Love Me First and uploaded a YouTube video. One of the things I love about the song is definitely the beat, I also love the video. It is not every day we get to see such a beautiful concept in the gospel industry. This beautiful song is a great rendition of how God loved us and chose us first to be his own. I think she was reading through Paul’s epistle and saw, ‘he loved us while we were still sinners‘. While a man in Christ is a new creation, I still feel like Chidinma’s music style is not new. It is the same old feeling that we have been used to. This is a personal opinion, and not in any way negative to attack her brand, but I believe she needs to twitch up her sound and lyrics a bit more. Have you heard the song? How did you feel about it?

I’m In Love
At the beginning of the year, she released her first 2024 single, ‘I’m In Love‘ and I think I love the song too. It reminds me of the first song she sang, ‘Kedike’, except that she chose to sing this beautiful song in reggae. Maybe I was expecting too much, but I absolutely love the new song. However, it felt like she sampled several other secular songs; at some point, her song sounded like Rihanna’s. I am so happy that she is making progress in her new industry.

What has Chidinma been up to?
Aside from releasing her songs, Chidinma has been on tour with other stars in Eeezee Concept. Recently, she sang with a francophone singer, Grace Jocktane. Seeing that she is growing her fanbase beyond Nigerian borders is beautiful. If you have listened to the song, you will agree with me that Chidinma’s French is flawless. I am really rooting for Chidinma, and I strongly believe that she will succeed with the help of her new record label. If you miss out on why she transitioned to gospel music, you can catch it in Punch Newspaper. Chindinma has also sung different songs like ‘I Recommend Jesus‘, ‘Blessings Follow Me Ft KS Bloom‘, and many more. She currently has 789k subscribers to her YouTube channel, with an average of 400k on her videos.
