4 Choir Giving Us The Best Afro-Gospel Music in 2023

Gone are the days when gospel choirs would only sing acapella and solemn hymnals. In the last few years, we have experienced a different rave of musical evolution, and many choir has gotten the rave. The shift represents a fusion of culture, spirituality, and modernity. While choirs once solely served religious ceremonies, today, they embrace a broader spectrum of emotions and styles. Afro beats infuse infectious rhythms and contemporary energy into choral performances, making worship more dynamic and inclusive. This shift attracts younger audiences and invigorates traditional hymns with fresh, celebratory vibes. It’s a testament to music’s ability to adapt, bridging generations and cultures while keeping the essence of devotion alive in a modern world.

  • The Logic Sound

The Logic Sound is the choir of the Logic Church, a youth church in Lagos. One of the reasons I particularly love this choir is because they give you the hottest gospel party you can ever think of. Do you need a gospel jam for your birthday party? Or do you need a playlist to make your next driving interesting? You should subscribe to Logic Sound on YouTube and get yourself into the rave of the Afrobeats moments.

  • The New Music

The first time I stumbled on New Music, it was their song ‘who be that guy?’, and I loved the video. I absolutely love the song, the lyrics, the video and directing. They recently released a new song, ‘Oranmonisefayati’.The term/name “Oranmonisefayati” is of Yoruba origin and holds several meanings to many people. For some, it is the one who backs them up, and for others, it is the solid backbone/support. The unwavering companion who walks by your side through every phase of life.

I like the song’s chorus and the part that says, ‘Oranmonisefayati de’, which means the one who sends one is here. They have other songs like ‘Attention’, described as a song for the season. They have remained in the face of the public, courtesy of their church structure. You can check out the songs on their church’s YouTube channel – The New Church

  • Soweto Gospel Choir

The multi-award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir sings traditional and contemporary songs in English and African. Most of their songs are religious or spiritual in subject matter. They have won several awards, ranging from Grammy to national awards. One of my favourite performances is ‘Arms of an Angel’, performed ten years ago. They have also collaborated with several people in the music industry across the globe. They compose and sing their songs, at the same time, they sing covers of popular songs. For example, they recently sang the cover for ‘thank you for sunshine’.
