Nigeria’s music industry has a rich history of producing talented artists who have not only entertained but also inspired millions with their heartfelt gospel music. Over the years, several Afro-Gospel artists have made a significant impact on the Nigerian music scene. Unfortunately, as time progresses, some of these iconic figures have faded from the limelight. In this blog post, we will highlight five veteran Afro-Gospel artists who have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s music landscape and whose absence we keenly feel.
ROOFTOP MCS
ln the early 2000s, a dynamic duo emerged on the Nigerian music scene, captivating listeners with their unique fusion of rap, alternative rock, and Fuji music.  Taking their name from Matthew 27:10, Adekunle Adeyoola, popularly known as Soul Snatcha, and Olaitan Hughes, also known as So Kleva, established the group Rooftop MCs. The journey of Rooftop MCs began in 2002 when they released their debut album, “Shock Therapy.” However, it was their 2007 hit single, “Lagimo,” that propelled them to greater heights.Â
Their vision emphasized that Christianity is a lifestyle rather than just a religion, and they skillfully conveyed this message through their music. With over five albums to their name, Rooftop MCs became pioneers of the alternative gospel music movement in Nigeria. They challenged the norm and brought a fresh perspective to how young music lovers could connect with the message of Christ.
Kenny Kore
Having contributed to Infinity’s notable tracks like “Olorioko” and “Aye Ole,” Kenny Kore’s transition to a solo career showcased his rare creativity and artistry. In 2009, he released his first solo album, titled “ELEDUMARE.” This album featured hit tracks such as “So More” (Are You Grateful?) and “Yanibo,” which quickly gained popularity among Nigerian youths and spread like wildfire. Kenny Kore’s impact goes beyond his music. He aspires to leave behind a musical legacy, having served God’s purpose in his time and established himself as an accomplished musician of legendary repute.
Kefee
Born on February 5, 1980, in Sapele, Delta State, Kefee’s musical journey began in her early years as she actively participated in church activities, particularly in choir singing. Her passion for music led her to write and compose songs, eventually propelling her into the Nigerian music industry as a gospel artist. In 2003, she released her first studio album, “Branama,” which quickly gained recognition and propelled her to gospel music stardom. The album enjoyed both domestic and international sales, with remarkable success in Nigeria and beyond.
Tragically, Kefee passed away on June 12, 2014, in a hospital in Los Angeles, California, due to lung failure. Her passing left a void in the Nigerian music industry and deeply saddened her fans worldwide. She leaves behind a rich musical catalogue that showcases her talent, passion, and dedication to spreading the message of hope and love through her music.
Buchi
Minister Buchi Bwai, born on June 24th, is a gospel musician who has captivated audiences with his exceptional talent for gospel reggae music. Buchi was born in Kaduna, Nigeria, to parents of Abia State origin. In 1983, Buchi moved to Lagos to pursue his studies in English Language and Literary Studies at the University of Lagos. His contributions to gospel music have been recognized with honors such as the prestigious AMEN Award for Best in Gospel Category in 1999, as well as other prestigious awards.
He has performed in church concerts and has been a part of Reinhard Bonnke’s stadium-packed outreaches, touching the lives of countless individuals with his uplifting music and powerful messages. His dedication to using his gifts to glorify God and touch lives is evident in the impact he has made through his music and writings.
Nikki LaoyeÂ
Nikki Laoye’s journey as a solo artist began in 2006 with the release of her debut track, “Never Felt This Way Before,” produced by renowned Nigerian music producer Cobhams. In 2008, Nikki Laoye released her debut album, “Angel 4 Life,” which featured collaborations with renowned Nigerian artists such as Rooftop MCs, Blaise, Jeremiah Gyang, and others.Â
Nikki’s musical achievements have not gone unnoticed, as she has received numerous accolades throughout her career. She was honoured with the All African Music Awards (AFRIMA) in 2014 for Best Female Artiste in African Inspirational Music and the Headies Award in 2013 for Best Female Vocal Performance. These awards are a testament to her exceptional talent and the impact her music has had on audiences across Africa.
