In the early days of hip hop, it was synonymous with the gangster lifestyle, but as time passed, this perception shifted, its scope broadened, welcoming voices from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. One significant evolution has been the emergence of Christian rap artists, who utilize the genre not only as a platform for self-expression but also for evangelization, encouragement, and inspiration. Emerging in the 1980s, these artists have consistently delivered quality faith-based tracks, despite the challenges faced by gospel rap as a genre. Let’s delve into the works of four of such artists whose profound reflections deserve a spot on your playlists.
Lecrae
Lecrae easily passes for the most recognizable name on this list for a lot of fans. From the flow to the music production, everything is da bomb. Christian rap has been pushed beyond its boundaries thanks to this guy. Lecrae is not only a rapper but also the label head and co-founder of Reach Records, which has signed some of the top faith-based rappers in the US. Dax.
I was genuinely intrigued by a music when my friend played it on a tiktok reel a while ago. I checked it out and discovered that it was “Dear God” by Daniel Nwosu Junior, better known as Dax. He is a Nigerian-born Canadian. I must admit that after listening to his music, his reflective lyrics struck a chord with listeners, motivating them to face their own reality while providing solace to those going through similar struggles.

God frame
Sharing his transparent journey through his own stories of coming to Christ and overcoming various things such as fatherlessness, addiction to pornography, and many more, is what God Frame has been able to do through his music while melodically rapping and singing over a variety of rap beats. God frame believes God can use his music as a way to affect and change people’s lives and that music is more than just a compilation of sounds. He is very talented as he knows how to blend the various genres of Rap, Pop and R&B into one. He is currently the music director and minister at a Baptist Church in Arkansas.
